The Tests

There are three parts to passing your driving test:

1. The theory test

2. The hazard perception test

3. The practical driving test

You need to have passed the first two at the same time before you can apply for your practical test. There is usually approximately six weeks between applying for your practical test and your test date but this does vary depending on where you live.

The theory test

The theory test is a 50 question multiple choice test. To pass, you must answer 43 or more questions correctly within 57 minutes. Questions are chosen at random from a bank of over 1,000 questions covering all driving topics.

The hazard perception test
Part two of your theory test shows you a series of 14 one-minute video clips,
each showing potential hazards involving road conditions, pedestrians or road users.

There are 15 hazards to identify and you can score up to five points on each one, depending on how quickly you identify them. The faster you identify a hazard which would affect the driver, the higher you score. You need to score at least 44 out of 75 to pass this test.

The fee for the combined theory and hazard perception test is £23

What sort of hazards will appear?

The test is designed to get the candidate to identify ‘Developing Hazards’ rather those static hazards or potential hazards.

For example – A zebra crossing is not a developing hazard, but if a pedestrian walks toward it, then it becomes a developing hazard and needs to be identified.

A side road is not a developing hazard, but if a motorist emerges from the side road ahead of you, then it becomes a developing hazard and needs to be identified.

How can you practice for this test?

The best practice for this test is driving. You will need to identify developing hazards as you drive, but instead of clicking a button, you should check your mirror. Ask us about hazard awareness.

Please note that it is necessary to pass both the Hazard Perception Test and the multiple choices Theory Test on the same visit.
